Synthetic fields are replacing more natural fields these days. The field is composed of nylon fibers which are filled with crumb rubber and sand that gives a cushioning effect for players. The infill also provides a drainage system that keeps the field playble in adverse conditions when most natural fields are unplayable. Artifical fields will compact like natural fields over time due to heavy usage and will lose there cushioning effect. Ponding of water due to compaction and lack of good drainage will keep the fields unplayable for longer periods of time. Bodily fluids from players can also cause problems with infection if not properly addressed. Specialized equipment is necessary to keep synthetic surfaces on sports fields safe and playable. Trained staff, using the right equipment on a sound maintenance schedule can positively affect the quality of the playing surface. Most equipment may be leased, rented or services contracted out. For equipment use on synthetic surfaces, please consult your manufacturer’s warranty. The following are some of the equipment Wilfred MacDonald Inc has to offer. Please call Steve at 201-481-2212 to discuss which products would work best for your situation.

Greensgroomer Synthetic Brush /Spiking equipment – typically this type of broom, brush or tine that is dragged over the field to stand the synthetic fibers up and re-distribute the crumb rubber. This practice is analogous to aerating natural turfgrass fields, as it reduces compaction of rubber particles and prevents fields from becoming excessively hard. Models can be pulled behind a tractor or utility vehicle.
- Synthetic Sports Turf Groomer works with all fill material currently used, in both wet and dry conditions.
- Patented brush design lifts turf fibers leaving them in a plush, upright position.
- Brushes move fill to low spots or depressions left after play.
- Synthetic Super Duty Blue Brushes retain their original shape, resist wear, and will not rot.
- GreensSlicer Spring Tine Rake consists of 3 rows of 28 tines spaced 7/8 inch apart for thorough coverage.
- Each row of tines may be adjusted to the desired level of aggressiveness.
- The GreensSlicer combs through the fill material, relieving compaction and assuring a soft, level playing surface.

Broyhill Sprayers – Liquid applications will be required to prevent weeds from growing through the synthetic surface and lessen the static charge from the crumb rubber. Wetting agents are applied on an as needed basis to improve infiltration of water into the rubber. Trufstat Pro Sanitizer products may need to be applied to prevent bacterial growth from bodily fluids. Sanitize your field with this FDA approved disinfecting liquid. It can be spray through any boom type applicator. Just add 4 oz of the product to every gallon of water. Once the field is dry, usually in about 2 hours, it is safe to play on. Models are typically pulled by a tractor or utility vehicle, with a 100 gallon tank (or greater) considered desirable. Annual calibration is required to deliver accurate amounts of material to the field. Backpack versions are available for small scale applications.

Turfco Metermatic Topdressers– Crumb rubber will have to periodically be applied to the field, as some material is lost over time. Top-dressers can be mounted to utility vehicles or pulled behind a tractor. A model capable of carrying 1 cubic yard is desirable. The Mete-R-Matic, Turfco’s well-known top dressing brand, has been known for its uniform application of top dressing and its simple, easy-to-use design. And now Turfco proudly introduces the Mete-R-Matic XL topdresser with an extra-large capacity hopper. At 60.75 cubic feet, the hopper capacity of the Mete-R-Matic XL is three times the size of the Mete-R-Matic III, for less reloading and increased efficiency on large turf areas.

Micro Rain Irrigation System – Water may need to be applied to reduce the temperature of the playing surface. Some manufacturers require irrigation to maintain the manufacturer’s warranty. Both above and below ground systems are available with a wide range of pipe, head, and nozzle types to choose from.Rinse, cool, condition with Micro Rain's waterreel system. Cool the turf in one pass in less than an hour. Knock down the crumb rubber back into the field after grooming with a brush. Rinse the field of any fluids from players during a game.

Redexim Verti-Art Turf Sweeper/Blowers/Vacuums– Turf Sweepers, blowers, and vacuums are used to blow trash such as sunflower seeds and peanut shells off the playing surface. The Verti-Art range of maintenance equipment includes the Verti-Top, Verti-Air, Verti-Broom, Verti-Brush.and Verti-Groom. As most users already know, synthetic turf is not "maintenance free." It requires regular cleaning and grooming to keep a field surface level and safe for players. The Verti-Top uses a rotary brush pick up surface debris and some infill. All this material is thrown on a rapidly shaking filter, which collects the debris, then redistributes the infill material back to the field. The unit also includes a fixed brush to incorporate the infill back into turf fibers. The Verti-Air blows high-speed air deep into the synthetic turf carpet right down to the base. A rotary brush then picks up the dislodged infill material and debris and throws it on a rapidly shaking filter, which returns the cleaned infill to the carpet. A filter vacuum extracts light debris and dust. The Verti-Air can be used regularly to revitalize and purify any artificial turf field right down to its `roots.` The Verti-Broom's triangular fixed-bristle brush stands synthetic turf fibers up, levels the surface and removes large debris. The Verti-Brush has five rotary action brushes that prevent infill compaction. Penetration depth can be adjusted right down to the base.

ReelCraft Hoses Reels– Hoses and specialized nozzles are needed for small scale irrigation (syringing). They are a necessary piece of equipment for baseball fields, as they are used to manage moisture on skinned areas. Reelcraft makes to different models for sports fields. There is a reel and trailer hose caddy that holds up to 150 feet of 3/4 hose that can be transported to different locations. The other model is the DGM Series underground hose reel that can be buried alongside of the field and remained hidden until it is used.
